How We Got Here
How we are able to spend a summer in Germany:
My boyfriend has played baseball for as long as he can remember. From little league to college to playing overseas, his passion for the sport is the reason we got this amazing opportunity.
Back in 2021, while pitching for his summer college baseball team he broke his elbow. He had surgery to get screws put in. The next year, the screws rejected and became infected so of course had to be removed. After the trauma to his arm it wasn't looking like he would be able to pitch the same again- if at all.
He worked towards being able to pitch again and in the fall of 2023 he achieved his goal!
He continued to play with his team and proceeded to coach the U15 team in 2024. Watching him further his passion in whatever way possible made me realize baseball would always be apart of our lives. Despite my limited knowledge on the subject, I've loved playing the role of his cheer leader and number one fan in the stands.
Since he was graduating from University at the end of 2024, he had played his last season with his team but we wanted to see what other opportunities baseball had to offer. Previous teammates had moved on to play for other universities in the States but after finishing his degree the idea of more school was less than ideal haha. Another path some athletes take is playing for a team overseas so he started researching European baseball teams to see if they had any interest in signing an international player.
After communicating with several teams, the Dortmund Wanderers (a baseball league in Germany), made the offer we had been hoping for.
He signed and we booked flights! I was just finishing my first year in college so he went ahead of me about a month before I was done with final exams. I joined him the first week of May, and will be here exploring and experiencing a beautiful European summer until the end of August when I will fly home to start school again.
We still can't believe we get the chance to see this side of the world as a little more than just tourists. We've already met so many wonderful people, the baseball community is beyond incredible and we are so grateful for their welcoming dispositions.
I'll have to make a separate post about the differences between baseball over here and back home, but the shared passion for baseball overcomes any foreign perspectives and language barriers. Stay tuned for all the updates on how the team does and what we learn during this chapter of our lives!
ciao ciao for now:)
